Inappropriate Behavior Prompts Temporary Closure of NYC-Dublin Portal
"The Portal," an innovative art installation connecting New York City and Dublin, is undergoing temporary closure due to reports of inappropriate behavior. This interactive exhibit, featuring two identical sculptures with live-streaming visual connections between the two cities, was unveiled near the iconic Flatiron Building just last week. Despite attracting tens of thousands of visitors in its short debut period, concerns arose over incidents such as individuals displaying indecent exposure or using profanity on the screen.
The Flatiron NoMad Partnership, responsible for the installation, acknowledged that while the majority of visitors engaged with the Portal respectfully, a small minority's actions tainted the experience. Both New York and Dublin authorities are collaborating to address these issues while striving to maintain the exhibit's positive impact. Measures include enhanced security, physical barriers, and software updates to filter inappropriate content from the live stream.
As a result of these efforts, the Portal will be temporarily shut down starting Tuesday at 5 p.m. EST, with plans to resume operation by the week's end. Originally intended to remain open 24/7 for six months, organizers are committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants once the installation reopens.
