In a shocking incident, Naresh Nagesh Nayak, the owner of the renowned Cafe Mysore in Mumbai, was robbed of ₹25 lakh by a gang posing as Mumbai crime branch officers. The robbery took place at his residence in Sion on July 14, 2024. The assailants, including both serving and retired police officers, used a police jeep to execute their plan.
The Incident
Six individuals in civilian clothes entered Nayak’s flat around 4:30 PM, claiming to investigate a tip-off about ₹17 crores of black money intended for election use. They threatened Nayak and coerced him into handing over the cash he had at home, which he explained was his weekly earnings from the restaurant. The robbers then demanded an additional ₹2 crore to drop the case, but left with the ₹25 lakh when Nayak insisted he had no more money.
The Aftermath
Nayak reported the incident to the Sion police, prompting a swift investigation led by Deputy Commissioner Prashant Kadam. The police tracked down the vehicle used in the crime and detained four suspects, including a serving policeman, a retired cop, an informant, and another individual. The police are investigating the mastermind behind the crime and how the robbers were tipped off about the cash at Nayak’s residence (Hindustan Times) and (Free Press Journal).
