Maldives Thanks India for $50 Million Budget Aid Amid Troop Withdrawal Dynamics
The Maldives expressed gratitude towards India for extending $50 million in budgetary aid following the withdrawal of Indian troops. Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer lauded the Indian government's gesture, emphasizing the enduring friendship between the two nations. The aid, provided through a rollover of a $50 million Treasury Bill via the State Bank of India, is seen as a significant goodwill gesture amidst evolving bilateral relations, particularly with the presidency of pro-China Mohammed Muizzu.
Zameer, who recently concluded his bilateral visit to India, expressed his appreciation on social media, thanking External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and the Indian government for the support. The aid is set to extend for an additional year starting from May 13, 2024.
The Maldives government underscored its deep appreciation for India's continuous assistance, particularly in infrastructure and community development projects, which includes substantial grant aid. This collaborative partnership is deemed crucial for the mutual prosperity of both nations.
In related developments, the Maldives announced the replacement of 76 Indian military personnel with civilian employees from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, marking the culmination of discussions regarding the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from three military platforms in the Maldives. Despite recent strains in bilateral relations, both nations remain committed to fostering cooperation for the benefit of their respective populations.
